Drohne Hockenheim Porsche Experience

Drone Filming at Hockenheimring: Porsche Experience Master GT4 Training with the Cayman GT4 Clubsport

On day two of the Porsche Track Experience at Hockenheimring, VR-Copter flew the aerials of the Master GT4 Training – 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport and 911 GT3 Cup at race pace – and delivered the tracking shots from the car-to-car rig at the same time. The agency was Grabarz & Partner, production by Vidture.

Project details

  • Location: Hockenheimring, Germany
  • Project: Porsche Experience Master GT4 Training (day 2 of 2)
  • Client / production: Porsche / Grabarz & Partner / Vidture
  • Services: Aerial filming, car-to-car

Brief and execution

In the Master GT4 Training, participants drive real race cars, coached by Porsche instructors. For the camera that means much higher speeds than on the Taycan day before. The drone therefore worked at a greater distance with pre-planned lines over the corner sections instead of following the car at eye level. Closeness to the car came from the car-to-car rig.

As on day one, fixed drone windows from the media schedule applied, coordinated with race control and the instructors. Between the windows the same crew switched to the camera car – aerials and tracking shots from one supplier.

Equipment and permits

DJI Inspire 2 with Zenmuse X7 in 6K for the aerials, car-to-car rig with gimbal for the tracking shots (more on car-to-car at jrjr.film).

Flight operations with the circuit operator’s clearance for the Porsche Experience Center grounds, proof of insurance and a general permit from the Stuttgart regional authority.

FAQ

Can a drone film race cars at race pace?

Yes, with the right planning: greater distances, pre-planned lines and clear drone windows. For shots right next to the car we combine the drone with the car-to-car rig.

Which permits does a drone shoot at Hockenheimring need?

The circuit operator’s clearance, insurance and the right permit for the operating category. VR-Copter coordinates this with race control and the authorities in advance.

How much does a drone operator cost for a shoot at Hockenheimring?

A shoot day with a drone crew starts at €1,300 net, with Inspire 3 and cinema setup from €2,900 net, and as a combined drone, FPV and car-to-car package from €3,900 net – each including pilot, equipment, insurance and permit coordination.
